Links of Interest

Following are some links that we like. Some might help you locate funds if JoMiJo can't help you. Some have nothing to do with philanthropy.

Foundation Organizations

National Network of Grantmakers www.nng.org - This excellent organization keeps us progressive funders organized.

Foundation Center www.fdncenter.org - Your search for us might have begun here. Granddaddy of foundation web pages.

National Center for Responsive Philanthropy at www.ncrp.org - They conduct research on and advocate for philanthropic policies that are more accountable to populations with the least wealth and least opportunity in our society. It's not venture philanthropy, of which I have great mistrust.

And see Changemakers. Tracy Gary's one of my main mentors.

Council on Foundations www.cof.org - One of their lawyers, John Edie, is a smash at their annual family foundation conference with his early morning performances about how to avoid the horrors of self-dealing. Every year those sessions are packed tighter than a miser. Sutter Health execs ought to go.

An Exposé of Effective Philanthropy

A startling look at what happens when foundations relentlessly support operating budgets and salaries. See www.prospect.org/archives/40/40pagenf.html. Starting in the mid-seventies, a bunch of staunchly conservative and close-minded wealthy foundations started funding conservative think tanks, infiltrating law schools, and training judges in order to bring about a dramatic shift in tax laws. We now have a wealthy class that can't be beat, way too many people on part-time jobs without benefits, a decimated "healthcare" system run by corporations looking for the bottom line, lamebrain efforts to marginalize gays and lesbians, a president who lies about our fascist system, and way too many people who believe him.

Music

Michael Hedges www.nomadland.com/Point_A.htm - Michael Hedges's official site.
If you're interested in learning some of the music Hedges played, go here: www.rootwitch.com/intro.htm

Peter Townshend www.petetownshend.com - This is my second favorite musician.

Miscellaneous

sensibleerection.com - Hide your eyes, sign up, totally remove the porn option, and then enjoy the many different kinds of web sites this international community posts every day. Some are amazing, a couple are really bad, and most are thoughtful.

Sensibleelection.com - A lot of the same folks from sensibleerection.com contribute here. Good discussions, a fair amount of flaming.

www.sensiblyeclectic.com/b2evolution/blogs/index.php - They have good news and politics entries.

www.orionsociety.org/... - A succinct essay by Wendell Berry on why local economies should dominate over multi-national corporations.

www.aldaily.com - A compendium of many different kinds of items: chock full of essays, articles and reviews from lots of different newspapers and magazines from all over the world, as well as links to newspapers, magazines and columnists. A veritable virtual feast, kinda conservative but always intriguing.

www.commondreams.org - For the news behind the news.

www.whatthebleep.com - A wonderful movie which will remind you what reality truly is. If you can get an old copy of Space-Time and Beyond, by Bob Toben, do so.

See Also

www.corporatepolicy.org - We address the legal status of corporations.

www.cepr.net - A bad-looking website worth coming through for some of the best writing on economics for the lay person. Check out Mark Weisbrot's stuff, particularly http://cepr.net/columns/weisbrot/ownership_society.htm, on the dangers of tax cuts.

www.corporation2020.org - This group of visionaries is hoping to transform how humans interact, for the better.

www.alternet.org - has many columnists and excellent writers on the progressive side

www.prwatch.org/cgi/spin.cgi - This will tell you how the PR people are trying to change your mind.

espn.go.com/main.html - Ok, I admit it. I'm still a sports nut.
